Sam Norman – 2024 Boys Champion

Sam Norman - 2024 Boys Champion

As you may recall we were ‘rained off’ at York and the 2024 Boys Championship was switched to Wheatley, Doncaster.

On Monday this week we enjoyed a very successful day in fine weather and Sam Norman (Fulford) prevailed with a very fine scores of 68 + 66 = 134 (-8) and is our 2024 champion.

Alex Boyes (Teesside) was runner up (-5) having led Sam by a single shot with three holes to play. However, a lost ball at hole sixteen (it stayed up in a Scots pine tree), resulted in Sam taking a one shot lead up the seventeenth hole. An errant tee shot required a bold recovery but even that came up short of the green by some distance. Alex faced a putt of around fifteen fee for birdie so it appeared that their scores may be level going to eighteen. The pitch shot played by Sam from around thirty yards looked good and duly obliged by nestling at the bottom of the hole for a birdie three. Needless to say Alex missed his put and Sam took a two shot lead to the final hole.

A closing birdie four for Sam gave him a comfortable three stroke winning margin.

Alex Boyes, runner up, was awarded the Neil Hardman Trophy (leading U16 in the Boys Championship) which follows his runner up finish at The R&A Boys Open Championship recently. A fine prospect of whom you will see and hear much more in the future.

Thank you to all who refereed / administered / supported at Wheatley.
