We had hoped that 2021 would herald a return to competitive golf at all levels but alas the second spike of Covid and necessary recent lockdown instructions may impact upon the early season fixtures. The proposed Fixture list 2021 is now available and will be updated as the season unfolds with every attempt being made by all concerned to try to fit cancelled events into what may be a very busy schedule.
We consider, for selection to represent the County, Seniors golfers who are of 55 years of age on the day of the competitions/matches and are members of clubs affiliated to the YUGC and who have a handicap index of 2.7 or below at the current time.
Our fixtures run from May to October each year and details of the 2020 matches can be found by clicking here. County Seniors matches consist of 9 holes Greensomes in the morning followed by 18 holes 4BBB in the afternoon. All matches are played off scratch and there are 12 players in a team, 24 players represented the County in 2019 in League and Friendly matches and all 2020 matches were cancelled.
Players who represent the County on six occasions in League matches are presented with ‘Senior County Colours’ in the form of a County Tie.
A Pre-Season meeting will be arranged in April for current, new and prospective County players. Entry to the event, which may have to be limited, will be available by invitation and any prospective newly qualified player may contact the Team Secretary with his details to be considered.
The Seniors County Championship is a 36 competition played over 2 days. The event this year is being held at Doncaster Golf Club on 14th and 15th June. You can enter online or download and submit the Entry Form.
We play three friendly matches against Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire and compete in the Northern Counties Seniors League which was formed in 2011 with matches against Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham.
The six EGU Northern Counties compete for the Seniors Six Man Team Championship which is a 36 hole stroke play event held over one day with the best five scores each round counting for the title. As winners in 2019 Yorkshire went on to represent the Northern Counties Seniors in the English Seniors County Finals at Effingham Golf Club in October 2019 and emerged as winners and English Champions after three days of very competitive matchplay golf. With no final in 2020 we are still holders of this coveted title and will play in the EGU Qualifying event this year being held at Wearside Golf Club on Tuesday 31st August with the English Finals at Grange Park Golf Club, St Helens on 6th/8th October.
We hope that our strongest players will be able to make themselves available for selection in all the Northern Counties League matches and the Team Championship in September.
