Cumbria win Big 6 @ Ulverston

Cumbria win Big 6 @ Ulverston

Thank you to those of you that travelled north to support our Men’s Team yesterday.

Alas, I must report that we were unsuccessful in the defence of our NCGU ‘Men’s’ crown.

A summary of the results (see below) reflects a win for the host county, Cumbria………..by just a single stroke and that after two hundred and sixteen holes of golf!

However, the story does not end there!

With Lancashire safely finished and clubhouse leaders the final member of ‘Team Cumbria’ stood on the infamous 18th hole needing a par four to secure the title for his team. A four hundred yard plus hole severely downhill with a right hand bias and out of bounds for its entire length. The clubhouse overlooks the eighteenth green and a crowd had gathered. Despite others urging caution the ‘Driver’ was selected and, helped by the breeze, a ball was ‘launched’. It eventually came to rest on the practice putting green adjacent the first tee which lies beyond the 18th green!!! In between tee and resting place it travelled out of bounds with deflections off the clubhouse roof, and two vehicles in the club car park one of which was the club Captain’s which now bears a scar on its roof. Following a ‘wrong green’ ruling the player pitched back up the hill and safely two putted for par. Game over!!

The onlooking spectators, including Team Cumbria and our Lancastrian rivals, who must have thought it was ‘all over’ having seen the direction in which the tee shot set off, watched on in disbelief!!

At the prize presentation the Cumbria Team Captain complimented the host club on their hospitality including the strategic positioning of cars in the car park! It must have been their destiny this year so Tom Stout’s retirement at the end of the season will have to wait a little longer!

Cumbria now head to Whittington Barracks GC to represent NCGU at the County Finals (Men’s) which may please at least one of you (Neil?!).
