The Northern Counties League match between Yorkshire v Lancashire was held at Wakefield Golf Club on 13th May

Thanks to Wakefield Golf Club as our team were able to play extra practice rounds leading up to this keenly awaited match against the current English Senior County Champion team who inflicted our only defeat last year which was good enough for them to win the League.

Our day started badly as the leading pair, Richard Jones and Johnny Lawrence, lost by 1 hole in the opening game of the morning Greensomes. However following three wins by Richard Norton and Alan Wright, Andy King and Mark Lawson, then Gary Cuthbert and Steve Mason things were looking good but when Ian Clarke and Chris Ingham followed by Andrew Whitworth and Jim Fairhurst lost their games we went into the afternoon Fourball games with the match in the balance 3 points each.

Jones and Lawrence won a fine match against the top Lancashire pair Hughes and Crowther 3/1 followed by Norton and Hughes losing the 18th to par and halving their game. King and Lawson together with Cuthbert and Mason were never in front in their games and lost 4/2 and 3/1 respectively to put Lancashire in front. The outcome looked grim as news that Clarke and Ingham were 1 down playing the 17th hole with Whitwort and Fairhurst 1 down playing from the 17th tee.

With true Yorkshire grit Clarke and Ingham won both the 17th and 18th holes to secure a win by 1 hole. Everything now rested on the last game and Whitworth made an excellent par on 17 to take the match to the last hole. All four players had putts to win the game and match but alas we had to settle for a hard fought halved match 9-9 which leaves the title still on offer.
