Boys Win EG Northern Qualifier

Winners again of EG Boys Northern Qualifier

This year the annual qualifying event was held at Shrigley Hall GC in Cheshire.

The weather on the day was like Autumn with wind, a little sun and cold! The course is a very interesting 6189 yd par 71 perched on the side of a hill above Macclesfield with some fantastic views of Manchester. The greens were excellent although on some very demanding slopes and quick!

Having returned from the European Amateur on Sunday, both Josh Berry and Dylan Shaw-Radford were delighted in being able to play for their county. Three of last years winning team were also in the attendance, Jack Northgraves (Captain), Jake Wallis and George Hanson with the final two places going to young players Tom Hartshorne and Alex Boyes (reserve).

We got off to a steady start in the morning with Josh leading the way, playing some steady golf around a course requiring some thought, certainly not a driver on every hole course! He went out in level, then dropping a shot at both 10 and 11, two tricky holes, although short, managed to pull one back at the short 15th par 4 to finish on 1 over.

Jake started well with birdies on two and five where he remained for the rest of his round to finish 2 under, a fantastic round with no bogeys!

Jack got off to a flyer in the front nine birdieing four, five and seven to be out in 3 under, however the back nine was not so kind with him dropping shots on the last two to finish a good 1 under.

Tom, our youngest player was next and sadly he didn’t get off to the start he so wished for, but he hung in there and steadied the ship.

George got off to a poor start with three bogeys on the front nine, but George is George and he bounced back with a couple of birdies to finish on 1 over.

Our final man in the morning was Dylan who goes about his business so calmly with a couple of birdies at four and seven, bogey at nine to be out in 1 under. Three birdies in the back nine along with a bogey he finished 3 under. Dylan won the morning best round with his 68.

A great team effort for the morning round where we finished on 4 under from our five best counting scores, finishing 8 in front of our nearest rivals, those Northumberland Boys! Robbo and I were pleased with the mornings display and now it was to go out and do the same again!

The boys went out in the same order with Josh leading the way again. Sadly, he got into trouble on the tricky par 5 seventh where he doubled it and then on the very small and interesting par 3 eighth, he bogeyed, but with a couple of birdies he managed to go out in 1 over. A double on the tricky eleventh didn’t help and with a couple of more bogeys towards the end of his round along with a solitary birdie he finished on 75, four over.

Jake had his first and only bogey on the fifth hole, but followed it with birdies on six, seven and eight with pars on the remaining holes to follow to finish on 69 again, two under. A terrific two rounds of 69 to give him the winning individual score for the day of 4 under, 138.

Jack started where he finished with bogeys on three of the first four holes and he couldn’t get it going after that.

Having had a little chat with Tom at lunch he was determined to prove he could do better than the morning round. A bogey five on the first followed by birdies on two, three, four, five to be 3 under, but alas he had a bogey on six, followed by pars to be out in 2 under. His back nine was not as good, but still he posted a very good 73, 2 over. He was delighted!

George had some lunch with crisps and was ready to go! George is a player who gets it round a golf course, and he played tremendously well in the afternoon with five birdies and two bogeys to finish with a winning afternoon score of 3 under, 68.

Dylan, our final player came in with a good 72, 1 over par having had two birdies and three bogeys.

Scoring in the afternoon was like the mornings play and Robbo and I were very happy with the boys finishing on 2 over from our five best cards to give us an overall score for the day of 2 under. This was tremendous scoring and as I always say consistent 2 round scoring is required to achieve success and this the boys did with ease. This is reflected in three of the boys finishing in the top three and all winning prizes including Jake obtaining entry into the Carris Trophy in a couple of weeks.

This was a fantastic team effort by all, including Alex, our reserve who caddied for Jack all day and supported the others. I must thank Steve Robinson (Robbo) our coach for his preparation and support during the day. Frank Greaves, our Yorkshire Seniors Champion who is of great help to me and the team on the day.

Another brilliant Team Yorkshire effort winning by 32 shots from Lancashire and Northumberland to take us to the England Golf Boys County Finals at John O’Gaunt GC in late August where this time we will make every effort to bring the trophy back to the North! Last year we won by 24 shots which was a record, so this year’s is certainly a record! As with all the boys before I am so proud of these guys who conduct themselves with true professionalism.

Well done guys!
