After the disappointment of losing to Lancashire in our last match the team rallied and beat Cumbria in a close match at Forest Park Golf Club 10 1/2 to 7 1/2. Once again Andy King and Mark Lawson got us off to a flying start beating a strong Cumbria pair 5/3. Surprisingly Richard Jones and Johnny Lawrence lost 3/2 but after Richard Norton and Peter Ward held on for a well deserved halved game the last 3 matches were comfortable wins for the Yorkshire team.
David Leaf (Fulford) the new York Senior Champion, who was a last minute replacement for the injured Ian Clark (Lindrick), had a great start by pairing up with Chris Ingham (Halifax West End) and winning 4/3. Yorkshire lead after the morning Greensomes 4 1/2 to 1 1/2.
Cumbria came out fighting in the afternoon Fourball matches with Peter Jack and Martin Barrand taking revenge for defeat in the morning beating Andy King and Mark Lawson 4/3. Johnny Lawrence and Richard Jones recovered their form by beating Lionel Dobson and Steve Wall 3/2 but Peter Ward and Richard Norton lost on the last hole to Greg Dixon and Tony Rushforth to bring the game to 6 1/2 to 5 1/2. Things didn’t look good at this stage we were 1 down in the next two matches but Gary Cuthbert made a splendid birdie on the last to secure a much needed point and this was followed by Andy Whitworth hitting a full wedge to 8ft and holing another birdie put at the last hole.
We needed 1 point to secure victory and news came through that new boy David Leaf and our magic anchor man Chris Ingham had won 2/1 to confirm victory.
