Whilst all Northern County League matches are important the intense rivalry between Yorkshire and Lancashire created additional pressure for both teams when the met at Woodsome Hall Golf Club yesterday.
As the current NCG 2016 Team Champions and EGU 2016 Senior Team Champions on an unbeaten 20 match run Lancashire were indeed formidable opponents but the Yorkshire players were well prepared ready for the challenge.
In the morning Greensomes Johnny Lawrence and Andy Whitworth got the team off to a great start with a 2/1 win against Englend Senior International players Trevor Foster and Tony Holt. This was quickly followed by Peter Ward and Gary Cuthbert grinding out a 2/1 win against recently crowned Northern Counties Champion and England International Ian Crowther and his partner Gary Byrne. Andy King with partner Mark Lawson together with Jonathan Plaxton/Cecil Bloice and Chris Ingham/Charles Webb were too strong for their opponents and maintained unbeaten records in the first three League matches in the Greensomes.
Seasoned campaigner in Walker Cup and as Captain of the England team reminded the team before they went in for lunch with a 5/1 lead that the job was only half done and we could expect Lancashire to come out fighting in the afternoon Four Ball matches.
This was very true as Trevor Foster and Tony Holt produced excellent golf to beat Johnny Lawrence and Andy Whitworth 4/3 in the first match.Similarly the very experienced Ian Crowther and Gary Byrne put up a great fight to try and square the match in the second game. However Gary Cuthbert and Peter Ward were resolute and heavy weight opponents and after taking an early 1 hole advantage early in the round matched the Lancashire pair blow for blow with Gary pitching from the greenside trap and holing a tricky 6ft putt to secure a vital win giving Yorkshire a 7/3 advantage.
In the remaining matches Yorkshire reached the turn with 1 hole advantages over their opponents and when Andy King/Mark Lawson won 3/2 it was left to Cecil Bloice to produce an eagle on the 16th and Jonathan Plaxton a birdie on the 17th hole to secure a 2/1 win and victory in the match. Chris Ingham /Charles Webb put the icing on the cake when Chris rolled in a birdie put on the 17th to win 2/1.
This was a great team performance but we now focus on the next match against Cumbria at Furness Golf Club, Barrow in Furness and supporters are welcome!
