Yorkshire Seniors narrowly defeated at Southport & Ainsdale

The Yorkshire Seniors’ unbeaten run since 2016 ended when we lost our second 2018 NC League match against Lancashire at Southport & Ainsdale 10 – 8 in a thrilling match.

We couldn’t have asked for better playing conditions on an immaculate golf course and started with wins in the first two Greensome matches when first Senior Champion Andy King and Mark Lawson beat  the Lancashire Senior Champion Tony Flanagan and Trevor Foster who is currently top of the English Senior Order of Merit by 2 holes.

Johnny Lawrence and Richard Norton followed by beating England International Ian Crowther and partner Bryan Hughes 2/1 both Yorkshire pairs playing under par golf.

Peter Ward and Ian Clarke lost a tight match by 1 hole to Tony Holt and Neil Self but Gary Cuthbert and Steve Mason played excellent golf to beat Billy Bromilow and Martyn Brooks 2/1 to give us a 3/1 lead in the match.

Unfortunately Andy Whitworth and partner Jim Fairhurst along with Charles Webb and partner Chris Ingham lost the last two games 3/2 to go in for lunch all square.

In the afternoon Four Ball matches Andy King and Mark Lawson had a great battle with Foster and Flanagan holding on to a 1 hole lead when halving the difficult last hole but alas Crowther and Hughes reversed their  morning result and beat Lawrence and Norton 4/3.

Hannis and Bromilow did the same to Cuthbert and Mason winning 3/2.

When Andy Whitworth and Jim Fairhurst produced excellent golf to beat Brooks and Bowker the match was delicately balanced with the match even and two games left on the course.

Ward and Clarke were all square playing the long 17th hole and when Ward putted from 60ft to leave a short putt for par it looked like they would be going down the 18th even. However Neil Self proceeded to hole a monster putt from 55ft to win the hole with a birdie.

As we followed this match down the 18th hole Webb and Ingham were playing the 16th hole 2 up on their opponents Riley and Owens after Riley had chipped in from the back of the 15th green to make a birdie to halve the hole and not go dormy 3 down. The Lancashire Captain Mike Gray expressed the view that it was Yorkshires match once again!

Sadly Peter Ward watched with dismay as his 10ft birdie putt slid over the edge of the hole and they lost by  1 hole. At the same time, out on the course, the Lancashire pair won the 16th  and 17th holes and Chris and Charles needed to win the last hole to halve the match. Chris Ingham pitched to almost the same spot as Peter Ward had done earlier but again we watched as his 10ft put shaved the hole to give Lancashire a victory 10-8.
