What a fantastic result against a Cumbria team to secure an unassailable lead in the League Championship with one match left to play against Cheshire. It is three years since we beat Cumbria and following three halved games in the morning Greensomes we knew we were in for another tough game. However both Jonathan Plaxton and Cecil Bloice together with Mike Hudson and Chris Mear won the 9th hole to secure 1 hole victories and we went to lunch with a slender lead 3.5 to 2.5
Peter Ward and Gary Cuthbert followed by Mark Lawson and Steve Mason won the first two afternoon Four Ball games to extend the lead to 7.5 to 2.5 but our lead soon disappeared when we lost the next three games and our last pair, Charles Webb and Chris Ingham were one down after 14 holes. The whole team including our enthusiastic President followed the match and when Charles Webb birdied the 15th we were hoping for a halved game to take top spot in the league going into the last match at Cheshire.
Chris and Charles had not finished however, when Chris drove the 286 yd 16th hole to set up a certain birdie but Charles stole his thunder with a great recovery from gorse and holed for another birdie put to go one up with two holes to play. All the players from both teams stood beside the 17th green when Charles rolled in a 20ft birdie put to win the game and match for Yorkshire.
We were not aware that Lancashire had lost to Northumberland thereby confirming that Yorkshire had won the League with a match to spare. What a great result from a superb team.
