Yorkshire U16’s Beat Lancashire U16’s
This annual match of our U16 Mixed Ages (4xU16, 4xU15, 4xU14) against Lancashire was played at Meltham GC on the Pennines on a sunny and hot day with a slight breeze.
These matches always give us the chance to play some of our new faces, especially in the U14’s which included Dougie Hargreaves (Sand Moor), Owen Walker (Hunley Hall) and Ewan Schofield (York).
Ollie & Jack struggled in their game and were never Up after the second hole losing 4&3. Our next three games won with Cian & Isaac leading the way with a 2&1 win. Lewi & Dan took control of their game early doors winning 3&2. Jack & Dan’s game was a little closer as they went out tied and with a couple of birdies at twelve and thirteen, they went 2UP where it remained winning 2&1. Lucas & Dougie didn’t get going after a lost ball on the first and at the turn were 4Down, a position they could not overturn, but with a fight back too late they reduced their deficit to 2&1 loss. In our final game Owen & ewan lost the first to a bogey but won the second with a birdie and then after hole six they took control turning 3Up and building on their lead to finish 6&4.

So, to the afternoon singles where both Ollie and Jack were seeking revenge for their loss in the morning! Ollie’s game against Luke Walton was back and forth for most of the round tied after fifteen but then bogeys from Luke on sixteen and eighteen gave the win to Ollie 2Up. Jack and joe bogeyed the first to halve the hole then with a couple of birdies from Jack and with three bad holes from Joe, Jack was 5Up after eight. He lost nine and eleven to a birdie but bounced back with two great birdies at twelve and thirteen to win 5&4. Cian played par golf for the front nine, whereas his opponent, James had four birdies and four bogeys for them to turn in level. James then took control and came out the winning 2&1. Isaac played some good golf to win his game 3&1. Lewi’s game never really got going, but his opponent took control going out in 2Up then with a par on twelve was 3Up. Pars on fifteen & sixteen took the game to Lewi 1 Down playing the last and that’s how it finished. Dan Kirby played good golf and was Up after three to increase that lead to 5up at the turn and coming out winning 4&2 with a level par round. Jack Balderson had an up and down game with his opponent going out 1Up where it remained until the fifteenth with Jack double bogeying to go 2Down but with a par and spectacular birdie on the last he halved his game to give us the win. Dan Richards couldn’t get going in his game and lost 2&1. Dougie’s game was up and down for the first nine and tied after ten holes, then with a run of three bogeys he couldn’t manage to get back into the game losing 2&1. Lucas didn’t have his best day today and sadly lost 5&4. Owen couldn’t manage to get into his game and lost 3&2. Ewan although not playing well took control of his game and was 2Up at the turn and with a birdie on thirteen he continued with a couple of pars to win 4&3.
Yorkshire 9.5 – Lancashire 8.5
This was a very close match, but with a fabulous birdie three from Jack Balderson on the eighteenth he secured our win! A great performance overall with a lot for the boys to take away. Craig and I were impressed with the way they performed and happy with Team Yorkshire!
