The boys went to Reddich Vale GC Stockport in good spirits on an overcast day where we had a few short heavy showers, but nothing to dampen our spirits! All the foursomes were very well contested swinging both ways in the majority. Our first pairing of the Lee Westwood Champion and Josh Berry struggled to get to grips with the course, where a practice round may have helped! The boys could not get back into the game after going 3 down on 13, loosing 3&2. Our next three pairings all halved on the last hole with a good fight back from Jake Sowden and Lewis Hunt who were 3 down after 14 holes, winning 15, 16 & 18! The York Union pairing of George Robson and Josh Stead worked well to give them a 3&2 victory. Our last game of Harry Mowl and George Taylor played some great golf having been 3 down after 9 to win on the last hole 1 Up. Score at lunch was 3.5 – 2.5 to us.
We struggled in the afternoon singles against a very good Cheshire side and we only up in 5 games at half way! Ben Schmidt had a very good contest with Remy Miller halving three holes on the trot in birdies, but sadly Ben could not overcome the 4 down after 11 holes to lose 3&2. Callum, our Boy’s Captain had a great game against Archie Palmer and was 2 up after 7 holes, but a fight back from Archie won 1 Up. Jack Maxey again was up against a good player on the day and lost 4&2. Jack Wilson was 2 down after 7 holes and slowly managed to pull it back to all square after 16 holes and keep it at that after 18. Josh Berry had a tremendous game against a tough opponent in Nathan Newton who was 3Up after 10 holes, but then Josh won 11, 13 with birdie, 14 with birdie to get the match back to all square. He lost 16 but bounced straight back with a birdie on 17 to win the hole and bring the game back to all square going up 18. He managed a par to halve his game! Josh Stead was 3 up after 12 holes, but lost a couple of holes to be 1up going up 18 and I mean going up the hill!!!!! He halved on 18 to win 1 Up. George Robson couldn’t make inroads into his game which was 2 down after 10 holes to lose 3&2. Robert Hillier had a comfortable win over his opponent 5&4. Jake Sowden could not really get into his match and lost 2&1. Harry Mowl, George Taylor and Lewis Hunt all went to last hole with Harry and George winning and Lewis loosing!
Phil Woodcock commented: “The boys played some solid golf, but were up against a very good team on the day and the golf was of a very high standard. Out of all the 18 games, 11 of them went to the 18th hole, this shows how close it was and these games could have gone either way, but sadly it was not to be our day! We have had a great season overall winning 5 of our 6 matches and I believe that Yorkshire Boys golf is currently in a great position.”
Cheshire 9.5 – Yorkshire 8.5.
