Yorks (U16 Boys) lose to Lancs
For this match we were at Sand Moor GC where Glen Ient, the PGA Coach is doing a cracking job for junior golf at the club where they now have over 70 juniors, and his junior academy goes from strength to strength. For a change we had a lovely day, a couple of light showers in the morning and a slight breeze.
Our experienced pairing of Harry and Ewan got off to a great start and took command of their game where they were 4Up with four holes to play. The Lancashire duo came back and hit them hard with two birdies and two pars in the last four holes to tie the game, a terrific come back! Sam and Kye didn’t really get going from the start halving the first in bogey’s and were 1Down at the turn. With 3 good birdies on the back nine from the Lancashire pairing to our pars they won 3&2. In our next two games, both Ben & Dexter and Max & Albie didn’t get going and both lost their games. The young pairing of Lewi and Ollie started well matching their opposition, but sadly lost two of the last three holes on the front nine to be 2Down at the turn. They then lost the par 3 tenth, but fought back with three good wins on 13, 15 and 17 to tie their game, a terrific fight back for them. Our final pairing of Jack, sand Moor member and Cian played well together and were 3Up at the turn, not playing their best golf, but good enough. The kept their nerve and finished the game off at the eighteenth winning 1Up, a great victory! We went into lunch 4 – 2 down.
Harry led the way in the afternoon and was 1Up after fifteen, but with two birdies and a par from his opponent, Tom lost 2Up. Ewan took control of his game from the beginning and was never down winning 3Up. Both Sam and Kye in their games didn’t get going again and sadly both lost. Max played better in the afternoon after losing the first to a birdie he bounced back and went 1Up after a birdie on the difficult par 3 tenth. He lost the next to a par and then won the par 5 eleventh with a par. With apar on fifteenth and a birdie on sixteen he secured the win 2Up. Dexter played steady golf going out in 2 over and 1Up to lose ten where the game remained at tied until he won fifteen and sixteen to win 2Up. Our latter games of the new boys didn’t really find their game and we lost four of the final five games. Cian was 1 Down at the turn but played the back nine well to win 2Up so overall a great performance for him on his first outing.
Sadly, we lost 12 – 6 but overall, the boys conducted themselves as always in the true spirit of the game. They enjoyed the experience although disappointed with the overall result especially against our red rose rivals! I must say Lancashire played very well indeed and all credit to them. The boys can’t wait for the rematch next year.
