Boys Team Win at Northumberland Golf Club
The Boys team played their first match of the season against the Northern Federation Boys at Northumberland Golf Club, this being the second year of this newly established event. The day started out reasonably warm with a slight breeze however as the day progressed it became more cloudier, with some long showers, but this did not detract from some excellent golf being played on both sides.
Jack Maxey (Captain) and Ben Schmidt (English Amateur Champion) led the foursomes off against Joe Robson and Alex Buchanan and a good battle between them ensued with the match remaining all square for most of the round until Yorkshire took command with a 1Up lead at the thirteenth, holding on to this lead until the 18th where they won 2Up. Our second match of Jack Ward and Oliver Abbott, both from the Harrogate Union were similar until they took control at the end winning 3&2. The two Tom’s got off to a flyer being 3Up after four holes, but sadly to see their lead reduce to all square after fourteen, but then managed to win the last two holes to win 2Up. In our last three matches Harry Bramley and Josh Stead couldn’t really get going and were never up with a 2Down after sixteen, playing the last looking for a halve, but sadly again was not to be and lost 2Down. Josh Berry and Oliver Caton again struggled with a few wayward shots and lost 2&1. George Robson and Harry Mowl were in control of their match at the half-way stage, but again lost the last couple of holes to lose 2Down. Score at lunch was 3 – 3 so all to play for in the afternoon.
Ben was first out against Joe Robson and after a steady first nine where he was 1Up took control firing a couple of birdies in to win 4&2. Jack Ward had a battle on at 1 Down most of the game, but coming in with a halve, and a very good halve against the experienced Will Skipp. Jack played a Captain’s role in taking a win 2&1 against Alex Buchanan. Josh Berry played exceptionally well in the afternoon with plenty of birdies in his round to win 5&3. George, Tom Kelly and Harry Bramley all from Fulford had convincing wins in their games. Harry Mowl had a good win at 5&3 and Ollie Abbott, our rear guard battled from being 2Down to win on the 17th 2Up, a gutsy performance! Overall score 11.5 – 6.5.
Once again, I was delighted with the Boys performance today, they are a unit, Team Yorkshire!
