Yorkshire U16’s Win the Battle of the Roses in the Sun
Our annual Mixed Ages match against Lancashire was held this year on home soil, Crosland Heath GC which has some fantastic views over Huddersfield and the Pennines. We picked the hottest day of the year! As extreme weather warnings were given, we decided to reduce the match to 18 holes Singles commencing in the morning and I must say this was a very wise decision as the heat was so intense by early afternoon and the boys beginning to struggle! Plenty of water was handed out during the round to rehydrate.
We had five boys making their first appearance for their County and you could see their delight when awarded their team kit to wear, but possibly slightly nervous on the first tee, but nerves quickly disappeared once they got to the second tee!
The boys battled well in the heat, and we managed a comfortable win over Lancashire with wins for three of the new boys Hal Theakston, Harry Phillips and Ewan MacKenzie all coming out on top. Our other two newcomers were Jamie Skinner and Joel Johnson who were up against tough opposition and sadly lost 2 Up and 2&1 respectively, two close games!
Team Yorkshire had a fantastic day in the sun! These matches are a great experience and learning curve for all, with the boys loving the challenge.
