U16 Boys win in Cumbria

Our Boys season got under way on 30th May 2019 with our U16 Boys (Mixed Ages) in Cumbria on a wet and breezy day at Penrith GC against the Northern Federation, which consists of 4 players from each of Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland. From our team of last year, six players remained the same with six newcomers.

The foursomes were very tight after half-way with us being up in only two games, two all square and the other two down, a lot to play for! Our top pairing of Tom Pyman and Harry Bramley (U14 winner in our Boys Championship) took control over the back nine and came out 1Up winners against a formidable pair of Will Coxon and Duran Gunn. Jake and Lucas pulled their game back from being 2 down after four holes to win 3&2. Max and Ben a comfortable pairing in foursomes again took control after nine holes to win 2&1. Jack Whaley with newcomer Spencer Datkiewicz with the game no more than one in it managed to square theirs. Josh and Luke struggled in their game. Finally, Sam and Luke Schmidt having been one down after 14, pulled it back to all square with a great birdie on the par 5 fifteenth to finally take the last hole to win by 1up. Score 1.5 – 4.5

After a quick lunch and with the rain still coming down, sometimes heavy the boys went out in the singles! Our boys coped very well in the rain and by half-way we were up in about half the games. Our two top games were hard fought games with the Northern Federation, Will beating Tom 3&1 and Jake managing to square his game having been 3 down at one stage on the back nine. Our middle order games did extremely well, especially Spencer in his first game winning by 8&7. Unfortunately, our U14 section struggled with Josh managing to halve his game on the last.
