“Sunshine all the way – as Bodle and Elwis win close tussle”
The first County Members’ Meeting of 2016 brought out the first really warm sunshine of the year. In fact it was glorious all day long, with many members playing in shirts and shorts. This was extremely welcome after the miserable weather we have experienced from the start of 2016.
There were one hundred and eighty competitors, all keen to get the season off to a winning start.
The Garforth Greens Staff had worked very hard to prepare and present the course in first class condition, which is difficult at this time of year. It was only two weeks earlier that the course had been closed due to waterlogged conditions, so they did a great job.
With very little growth on the greens, they were very firm and very quick, with many players relating stories of three and even four putts.
This seemed to keep the scoring low, with a very congested leaderboard.
At the end there were seven pairs tied on 41 points and a total of 18 pairs within two strokes of the lead, which managed to keep everyone glued to the leaderboard as the day progressed.

This being the first meeting of 2016, was also the first time that we have used the new 90% stroke allowance, rather than the old 75%, and without the old maximum of 18 strokes allowance.
For all those of you who thought that this would slant the results in favour of the higher handicappers, then please look at the results in the link provided below, which shows the handicaps of players. It will immediatley be clear that this has not happenned.
One very unusual occurance was that the third and fourth places were completely tied on back 9, back 6 back 3 and last hole. They were also tied on last 6 of the first 9, last 3 of the first 9 and the last hole of the first 9. They could only be separated on the last 2 holes, which I dont remember happening before.
The Garforth Golf Club were exellent hosts, with many compliments from County Members about the course.
The President of the Yorkshire Union, Mr Jonathan Plaxton, presented the prizes and thanked Garforth G.C. for an excellently prepared course.
The Garforth Captain, Mr John Dexter, said that he hoped that everyone had enjoyed the course, and that they would be welcome to return in the future.
