Seniors start NC league with a win against Durham

NC League Match v Durham at Barnard Castle

It was good to finally get the League season started in defence of the title won last year against Durham at Barnard Castle Golf Club. With three new players joining the Senior ranks including past County Champion Richard Jones (Rotherham) who played his 100th game for the County team last year together with Richard Norton (Beverely) and Jim Fairhurst (Bradley Hall) we had a strong team.

However with 5 of the 6 games finishing on the 9th hole we had a tough task as first Johnny Lawrence and Richard Jones secured a half followed by the same result from Ian Clarke and Peter Ward.

The next three games all went to the Durham team but a fine 2/1 win for the last Yorshire pair Chris Ingham (Halifax West End) and Jim Fairhurst( Bradley Hall) secured a valuable point to finish 4/2 down at lunch.

The team responded in magnificent style with Lawrence and Jones leading the recovery winning the first game 2/1 followed by Ward and Clarke halving their match when Ian Clarke rolled in a 20ft birdie putt on the 18th hole.

Cuthbert and Norton had a convincing 3/2 win to put Yorkshire ahead in the match for the first time and momentum was maintained when Andy King rolled in a 12ft birdie putt on the 18th hole to secure a win for him and his partner Mark Lawson and the last two pairs, Mason/Whitworth and Ingham/Fairhurst secured 3/2 victories to win the match 13/5.
A great start to the season.
