The Yorkshire Senior team keep the pressure on league leaders Lancashire with a fine win against Cheshire at Huddersfield Golf Club. With four changes from the team which beat Cumbria this was a very creditable performance with Kevin O’Rourke (Middlesbrough) making his debut in partnership with Rod Shimwell (Hessle) and contributing 2 1/2 points in the day.
The morning Greensomes games were very competitive with three games finishing all square and Yorkshire leading 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. We had a poor start to the afternoon Fourball games with Johnny Lawrence(Moor Allerton) and another debutant Alan Wright ( Hessle) losing by one hole to Gareth Bradley and Andrew Hill.
Mark Lawson (Garforth) and Peter Ward (Middlesbrough) couldn’t find their best form against Dave Nelson and Olympic Hockey Gold Medalist turned senior golfer, Martyn Grimley who won 5/4 giving Cheshire a 6 1/2 to 3 1/2 lead in the match.
Gary Cuthbert(Alwoodley) and Steve Mason (Wakefield) set us back on track with a 2/1 win which was matched by the Bradley Hall pair Andy Whitworth and Jim Fairhurst who turned a two hole deficit at the 9th hole into a two hole lead by the 15th after Andy birdied 5 holes from the 10th and Jim made a great par 4 on the 15th.
Sean o’Rourke and Rod Shimwell came out on top with a 1 hole win against the England Senior Captain, Roy Smethurst and partner Ron Harrison to secure the match in Yorkshire’s favour.
Chris Ingham and home player Charles Webb put the icing on the cake with a solid performance to win by 1 hole. Final result 11 1/2 to 6 1/2.
