Seniors – 2022 County Champions

Seniors - 2022 County Champions

The Yorkshire Senior Golf team led by Captain Andy King regained the English County Finals title played this week at Rothley Park Golf Club in Leicestershire.

The other teams competing were Wiltshire, Warwickshire and Kent. It was noticeable how much the overall standard of all the counties had improved from last year. Yorkshire beat Wiltshire and drew with Warwickshire over the first 2 days and needed to beat Kent on the last day to secure the title. After the morning foursomes Yorkshire led 2-1 and needed to secure 3 matches out of the 6 afternoons singles to claim victory. Narrow defeats for Richard Norton and Richard Jones left the game in the balance but a well deserved win for Andy Woodhead in the 3rd match restored hope. Victory was secured by big wins at the end of the field for rookies Steve Cain and David Sanby. By the time the last match involving stalwart and Yorkshire legend Stephen East finished, victory was already Yorkshires. The excitement levels in the afternoon were more akin to being on a ride at nearby Alton Towers. The win was a team affair with another rookie Ian Backhouse and Northern Counties champion Ian Clarke sitting out the last session. Such was the strength in depth of the Yorkshire team that they could afford to leave out two such high quality players.

Everybody contributed during the week both on and off the course. Team spirit was once again a major factor. Not only did the team display high levels of skill and aptitude but attitude was absolutely fantastic. It was a double decker of a performance.
