Richard finishes with a brace of birdies to win title by 1 shot.
The 2022 YUGC Amateur Championship was held at Fulford Golf Club on 16-18 August 2022.
We witnessed a tense conclusion to the event with Richard Wheatley (Bradford) prevailing thanks to a final round of 67 which included a brace of birdies to close out. This enabled him to overtake Jack Northgraves (Ganton) who was safe in the clubhouse hoping he might at least have secured a playoff place!
Jack did win the U18 award (The Alvin Trophy) and also the Alan Sowden Salver (awarded to the runner-up) but it was Richard’s day and one that he’ll never forget!
At forty-two years ‘young’ Richard showed our younger competitors the way home and finished in style with his proud Dad looking on from the sidelines.
The Yorkshire Inter-District Plate award went to Bradford for the first time – Oliver Tasker (South Bradford) backing up Richard Wheatley’s scores over the first 36 holes of the championship.
The photographs show Richard and Jack with their respective trophies and the YUGC President Terry Collins with the District Salver winners – Richard and Oliver
Richard will be representing YUGC at Woodhall Spa in the England Golf Champion of Champions event.
We are very grateful to Fulford for hosting the championship and to all their staff and members for affording us the opportunity to do so.
We are also grateful to those clubs which granted courtesy to FGC members during the three days of this event.
In 2023 we look forward to being at Moortown when Richard and Jack will no doubt be competing once more.
