Jake Wallis – Boys Amateur Champion

Wallis - Double Champion

We played the Boys Championship at Moor Allerton GC celebrating its Centenary on Holes 1-9 & 19-27 so at 6800 was a tough test. It was a cold day, no sun, but no rain and a slight breeze.

We had 72 players in the field and were sadly missing our star players of Josh Berry and Dylan Shaw-Radford due to England duty.

After the morning round Jake Wallis (Garforth) led with a 4 under 68, four in front of Ethan Dennet (Doncaster) and five in front of Tom Hartshorne (13years) and Sam Norman (Fulford). All was set for an interesting afternoon, could Jake hang on to his lead for 18 holes.

Ethan continued to play well, but sadly fell away towards the end to finish joint third with Sam. Many of the players had better second round scores which was good to see.

So, it was down to Jake and Tom and after 9 holes it was close with Tom on +2 and Jake on -1, having dropped 3 shots. He then bogeyed the 10th hole to go level. Tom was playing ahead of him and birdied the 11th and then holed a monster putt on 12 to eagle it and take him to 1 under. Jake followed Tom’s eagle on 11th with a birdie and again on 13th to go 2 under.

Tom played the last few holes in par to post a club house score of 1under which for his age of 13 was terrific!

Jake bogeyed the 17th meaning he needed a birdie on the last to win as if scores are tied after 36 holes the winner is declared by countback on the afternoon 18 which meant Tom would win. Jake hit a reasonable drive into the right side rough and went for the green landing the ball pin high to the right of the green in light rough. He played a poor chip for his standards and was left with a 25-foot putt to win which he holed to become Yorkshire Boys Champion again having won back in 2020 at Scarcroft.

What a finish to another exciting Boys Championship and congratulations to Jake, double Champion.
