Boys Champion 2022 Isaac Smith
Winners with Terry Collins (YUGC President) & Mark Fielding (WHGC Captain)
The 2022 Yorkshire Boys Amateur Championship was held at Woodsome Hall Golf Club with a full entry of 72 players of differing ages ranging from 11 to 18.
The day started in very wet conditions with persistent rain until about 11.00am when the low handicap players were about to set out. At one stage in the morning, it was looking like we may have to suspend play as greens were being squeegeed, but in the end a delay of 30 mins was made available for the afternoon tee times. Conditions improved over lunch with bright sunshine and a strong wind, then as the day progressed the wind dropped, and the rain came back, however only as showers. A very differing day, some said we had 4 seasons in one day!
Leader after the morning round was Ben Brown with a 1 under par 69 which qualifies him for entry into the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship. Moortown player, Josh Stephens was lying second with a par round of 70 with fellow club teammate Isaac Smith a shot further back on 71, then 8 players with 75 or better. The afternoon looked set for some good golf! Ben held his own to the seventh, but then had a double on the par 4 eighth, followed by a bogey on 9! Many began to drop shots from the turn; however, Isaac and Josh were steady away as Ben continued to falter. Alfie Baldwin came in with a magnificent 2 under par 68 to finish sixth overall, a great effort! Captain Wallis had two consistent rounds of 73 & 72 to finish a good third followed by Ben Brown and George Hanson. Josh Stephens posted a 72 in the second round for a 2 over total of 142 so it was then down to Isaac who dropped a shot on 17, just one shot in it going down 18. He played sensibly down 18 with iron followed by a good shot into the final green to leave him a makeable putt, but just missing, and finishing with a par for a one-shot victory to become Yorkshire Boys Amateur Champion 2022. Josh Stephens won the Neil Hardman Trophy for best U16 Boys score.
All the boys were impressed with the course and the weather conditions did not detract from an enjoyable experience!
