Welcome to the fourth newsletter of 2017, and we are now well into August – six events down, and only three more for the 2017 season. Please note that the closing date for the meeting at Ripon City Golf Club is tomorrow, 10th August, so if you want to play, and haven’t yet entered, you’ll have to enter on-line, as the post won’t get it to me in time! If you are playing with us at Tankersley Park tomorrow, then you can of course bring your form and cheque along there.
The final event of the year is the traditional Invitation meeting, when members are encouraged to bring a guest to enjoy the day and to see what we can offer. It is normally held at the home club of the Yorkshire President, and this year it will therefore be at the Harrogate Golf Club on the 21st September – closing date for entries is the 31st August. This event, and also the venue, are always popular, and hence there is a chance that a ballot may be required to limit the field; whilst member/member pairs may submit entries, these would be the first to be withdrawn if there is a ballot.
Another reasonable field will assemble for the first Autumn meeting at Tankersley Park tomorrow, where the weather is threatening to be nice, and I am told that the course will be in good order, despite the recent heavy rain.
RESULTS – The fifth event was at Crosland Heath Golf Club on Thursday 6th July, when 140 players toiled up and down the slopes. As was the case at Dewsbury District, the players did enjoy the splendid views which the course offered, and it was another fine weather day, marred by a short spell of light rain. Many good scores were returned, and you had to make 44 points to be in the prizes – the best was submitted by Messrs Marsden [Wetherby G.C.] and Earp [Moor Allerton], winning by virtue of their splendid back nine of 24 points.
The Sitwell Park Golf Club was the host for the second Summer meeting and again 140 players enjoyed another fine day, marred for a short time by spell of rain. I was unable to be present, but as usual the efficient team of YUGC officials ensured that the day went smoothly. Again, many good scores in the 40’s were recorded, but, in a close finish, determined on a count-back, the best of the bunch was a fine 45 points from J. Britton and R. Maynard [Hessle G.C.].
