The week was of mixed weather, but in the main it was dry, blustery at times with varying directions although nothing to detract from some good golf!

Yorkshire v Surrey

Our first day’s match was against Surrey, formidable opponents with the foursomes in the morning comprising three games. Josh & Dylan got off to a disappointing start after birdieing the first hole to go 1Up, following that with bogey, bogey, double bogey to be 2 Down. On the par three tenth they went to 3Down. They then birdied eleven and par at the next to bring it back to 1 Down. A birdie on fifteen brought the game alive as it was now tied. Dylan stood on sixteen tee and hit a fantastic shot to the top of the bank where the ball came to rest then started rolling back towards the hole where   it just missed for a “hole in one” to finish one foot away and a win to go 1Up. Surrey birdie on seventeen, game all square going down last to finish with two pars and game halved. Josh and Jack started well and were 3Up by the turn, going out in 2Under. A slight faulter pursued and then two holes won with par’s gave them the game 3&2. Our final game of George and Jake was always in command and were never down to tie. Lunch score Yorkshire 2 – Surrey 1.

In the singles our lead player of Dyaln was 3Down after eight, but with birdies at 9, 11 and a par at 10 he brought the game back to all square. He was then in control and with birdies on 14 and 16 he won 3&2.

Josh Berry sadly did not play his best and went out losing 3&2.  As usual George romped ahead and won his game comfortably 6&5. Jake had a tough battle against James and was 3Up after thirteen but lost the following hole to two birdies and three pars to finish losing 1Down.Josh battled to win his game 3&2 with Jack our last man being 2Down after 14 but finishing 1 birdie and 3 pars secured a halved game.

Final score Yorkshire 5.5 – Surrey 3.5 so a good start.

Yorkshire v Worcestershire

Our second day allowed us to meet Worcestershire losers on the first day against Wiltshire. Both Josh and Dylan led the way and were up against two determined players early doors finding themselves 4Down after seven holes. They managed a fight back winning eight and nine, but then the Worcestershire pair had a fine run to beat them 4&3. Josh and Jack had a battle with no more than 1 hole in it until the seventeenth where a birdie clinched it for the opposition. Jake and George played well against their pair and came out winners 4&3. Lunch score Yorkshire 1 – Worcestershire 2.

Our top three players Dylan, Josh S and Josh B had battles on their hands, but sadly could not manage to win, with only Josh B taking half a point from the three games. Not the start we were looking for. Jake was out in 3Under to take a 5Up lead to the back nine and finished winning 7&6. Tom in his first singles game struggled on the front nine to reach the turn 4Down. With some encouragement he started the back nine in fine splendour with four threes, three of which were birdies to get the game back to all square and then continued with pars at which stage his opponent was more than stunned to lose 2&1. I was lucky to witness Tom’s back nine for which he played some spectacular golf to come out on top having been down by so much, well played Tom.

Final score Yorkshire 3.5 – Worcestershire 5.5 not the score we wished for.

Yorkshire v Wiltshire

The final day was poised for a great finish with all four teams on 2 points.

We got off to a reasonable start winning three of our foursomes, however Surrey won all their three games to be leading us by 2. The afternoon didn’t produce what we required to do, and Surrey won their singles games 5.5 with ourselves only winning two and tying two giving us a win over Wiltshire, but not enough to beat Surrey. Unfortunately, we did not play our best on the second day allowing Surrey the victory.

Final score Yorkshire 5.0 – Wiltshire 4.0

I must thank my team, Team Yorkshire for their efforts this week and conducting themselves with the upmost dignity, playing the matches in the true spirit of the game. New friendships were made by all which will last for ever. We now look to rebuild a new team over the winter ready to go again in 2024.
