Boys win EG Northern Qualifier
This year the annual qualifying event was held at Kendal GC in Cumbria.
The weather on the day was mixed, we had rain, wind, sun, hot and cold so you could say a good mixture of British weather! The course is a very interesting 5792 yd par 69 perched on the top of a hill above Kendal with some fantastic views of the Lakes once you get to the top. It has 2 par 5’s and five par 3’s varying in length from 129yds to 221yds.
We got off to a great start in the morning in the morning with both Ben and Josh each returning 2 under par rounds of 67. George was our next player who hit some trouble on the back nine to return a 74 which did not count with only five scores from six counting. Jack got off to a poor start with a bogey on the first hole, a blind 232yd par 4 hole directly uphill and then bogeys at three and four, but then managed to steady the ship with four birdies in the remaining 14 holes to return a fine 68. Jake was next and like Jack, bogeyed three of the first seven holes and then got it back to one under on 16 to falter with bogeys on 17 & 18 for a 70. Dylan, our final player played steady golf, sadly the putter was failing him, but he managed to return a fine 70. So, after the morning round we were 3 under par for the team and 17 shots in front, but this year we were not going to let the lead slip by being complacent, so the guys were back out in the afternoon full of determination!
Ben was off to a good start again with birdies on four and five, but with dropped shots at seven and nine went out level. A couple of bogeys on 12 and 14 were followed by a poor tee shot on 15 out of bounds to return a double but bounced back with an excellent 3 on 16 to finish with a 71. Josh got off to a very quiet start with a bogey on four to be 1 over after 11, but then came the par 5 twelfth where he eagled to be back under par and followed this with a birdie on 13 to finish his round on 67, 2 under. Once again George got off to a flyer with two birdies and a bogey in the first nine holes to be 1 under, but once again the back nine took its toll to finish once again with a 74.
Jack was steady away but hit trouble on 13 finishing with a 7 and posting a 72. Captain Jake got off to a flyer with 5 threes and a two in the front nine to be 3 under. One more birdie allowed him to finish with a 65, 4 under. This was followed by Dylan who got his putter working better with him having 5 birdies and 1 bogey for another 65. Total counting score for the afternoon was 5 under par so overall a team score of 8 under for the day.
This was a tremendous team effort by all, including Isaac, our reserve who caddied for Jake all day and supported the others. I thank Steve Robinson and Craig Fricker for their preparation and support during the day, they were brilliant. Frank Greaves was a tremendous help to me and the team on the day and to all our supporters a big thank you, the boys love to see a friendly face in the crowd cheering them on.
Finally, a big thank you to all my team for a fantastic performance finishing 8 under par on the day and to win by 24 shots, which I believe is a record for this event! You all played a part in getting us past the winning post and now we turn to repeating this in the final! I could not ask for more, you conducted yourselves with true professionalism and as I always say we are one and that one is “Team Yorkshire” for which you have done yourselves and Yorkshire proud, especially me!
