Yorkshire Boys beat Cheshire Boys
This was our fourth match in the Northern Counties League at Prenton Golf Club on the Wirral and guess what we were greeted with Storm Floris – strong winds all day and showers some extremely heavy in the morning forcing play to be suspended for several minutes. However, the boys from both sides played some tremendous golf in tough conditions.
Archie and Josh were our first pair out and played some steady golf apart from a poor start at the first for the front nine to be 2Up where they remained until the fourteenth and a run of bogeys to finish saw them lose 1Down. Our next pairing was Harry and Ewan who sadly could not getting going and were 4Down at the turn and it continued for them to lose 6&5. I brought Zac Ayr into the team following his good performance this season and partnered him with George, however things were not working on the front nine where they both agreed they played poorly. Then after being 2Down at the turn the game turned with the Cheshire pair playing poorly allowing Zac and George to win 3&2 with some steady golf back nine. Dan and Will were never down in the game and won 3&2. George and Elliot were down in their game until the thirteenth, then managed to go 2Up at sixteen to close the game on seventeen.
Lunch Score: Yorkshire 3 – Cheshire 2
All to play for in the afternoon with the sun coming out, but alas still the strong wind.
Harry led the way playing Harry Kell a good player and was 2Up after four holes, but then it swung back to being 2Down at the turn and pulled it back to tied after eleven and it was tied going down eighteen and sadly a three putt gave the game to Cheshire 1Up. Josh won his game after being Up all the way. Disappointment for Ewan who had a bad day and lost 4&2. Archie was up early in his game but out tied and losing seventeen to a par was 1Down playing eighteen and finished with a fabulous birdie to half his game. Zac took control of his game winning the first and never looking back to win 3&1. George Cooper played some fabulous golf in the conditions and was 3 under to beat Lawson 4&3 and even complemented George on his golf. There was no more than 1 in it in Dan’s game, and he managed a tied game. There was no more than one in it in Will’s game, and he took control with a solid finish to win 2&1. Elliot was Up in his game most of the way and closed it out on sixteen with a terrific shot into the par 3 and two putts to win 3&2. Finally, George had a mixed game but managed to win 2&1.
Final Score: Yorkshire 10 – Cheshire 5
This was a terrific win in view of us losing many of our star performers, our Captain Jonty to the US where he starts on his scholarship, Alex and Tom to Home I’s, Josh and Theo on holiday. The boys played some great golf in the conditions, and I was proud of all of them with the Team spirit very high. Well done to Team Yorkshire and now we move on to our final match against Durham at Horsforth in September.
