Yorkshire Boys Tie with Cheshire Boys
Our penultimate match of the Northern Counties League was against Cheshire played at Delamere Forst GC, what a delightful course and the staff were excellent, a warm welcome. For a change the day was not the usual rain, it was a breeze, but sunny day.
In our first game of Captain Jack and George we got off to a poor start losing two early holes, but bounced back to take the turn all square, but alas lost the tenth and remained 1Down until sixteen where they pared and on seventeen Cheshire birdied to level the game. So down eighteen they went and with a terrific birdie from Jack and George game was won 1Up. Again, Tai and Alfie started poorly with and were 3Down after nine holes and they could not turn the game around and lost 4&3. The young pairing of Josh and Tom were once again terrific going out in 1Under to be 2Up and kept things together over the remaining holes to win 3&2. Sadly, Benjy and Jonty didn’t get going at all, losing 4&3. Our final game of Luke and Kyle were in control from the start, however at halfway they were back to all square, but then had a run of birdies and pars to win 3&2. So we went into lunch with a 3 – 2 lead.
Jack led the afternoon singles with a good game against Spencer bouncing back and forth with Spencer winning seventeen with a par to be 1Up going down eighteen. A great birdie from Jack winning the hole to halve the game. Alfie had an indifferent game but managed a win of 3&1. George had a tough game against Cole who was in the lead going out 1Up, but George had a par on ten to tie the game and it stayed like that until thirteen where Cole won the hole. George then finished with four threes to win on the seventeenth 2&1, a good win! Tai didn’t have the best of days and lost his game 6&5. Josh went 1Up on the first and had a run of birdies on six, seven and eight to go 3Up and so it continued to win 5&4. Tom played well, but on the day his opponent played the better. Benjy was similar and sadly Jonty did not play well for him. Kyle lost his game 4&3, thus allowing Cheshire the Boys Northern Counties league title. Luke played well against his opponent being 2Up after seven, but a fight back brought the game to level after nine and it remained until fifteen where Luke went 1 Down, but with a par on seventeen game all square so down eighteen where sadly the Cheshire boy lost his ball and scored seven and with Luke having a good par won the hole to win 1Up.
The match result was 7.5 – 7.5.
It was a very disappointing day for the boys, but they certainly conducted themselves with great dignity throughout the match and I was extremely proud in the way Team Yorkshire performed, they are a credit to themselves and their county.
