In this inaugural event for the Northern Counties, Yorkshire Boys take the title. The league was split into two divisions, North – Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland and South – Cheshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire with each divisional team’s playing each other and the winning team in each league progressing to the final. Durham winners in the North and Yorkshire, the South with the final agreed between both teams to be played at Cleveland Golf Club during half term.
We were blessed with some fantastic weather, sunny intervals, however a little cool, but with only a slight breeze, unusual for Cleveland! The course was in excellent condition, with the greens very fast having been ironed in the morning, a true test for the boys!
The Foursomes were led by a pairing of Under 16’s teeing off at 8.30am due to the clocks altering. Unfortunately, Jack Whaley and Ben Brown couldn’t quite get going on the back nine, having turned all square and sadly finishing up losing 4&2. Captain Jack Maxey with partner Ben Schmidt, Brabazon & English Boys Champion led the Under 18’s boys match playing against Will Skipp and Adam Charlton. A very tight match ensued with the Yorkshire duo coming out top winning 2&1. Both pairings of Josh Berry & Jack Ward and the two Tom’s, Pyman and Kelly took control of their games around the turn, coming out winning 3&2. In our final game, Oliver Caton & Harry Mowl had a convincing win over their opponents 7&6.
A quick lunch then out for the singles, starting at 12.30pm. Once again Jack and Ben struggled against two Durham lads playing very well indeed, Jack loosing 3&2, but Ben bounced back over the closing holes to win his match 2&1. Ben Schmidt was against Will Skipp and was 3up after 5 holes, but then Will put the pressure on to level the game at the turn. In true Schmity form, determination kicked in and he came out victorious on the 17th, winning 2&1. Captain Jack was 5up after 5 holes against Adam Charlton which continued, sadly missing a couple of chances to close him out earlier however still winning 3&2. Josh Berry had a comfortable win over his opponent 4&3. Also, a comfortable win for Harry, 3&2 and last match out, Oliver winning 5&3. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for both Jack Ward and Tom Pyman who both struggled to lose 2up and 2&1. The only match to manage to get to the 18th was Tom Kelly, playing in the last bit of daylight left closing out his match with a par to win 2up.
This was a terrific win for the boys in this new format competition, once again we play as a team, that’s why we are Team Yorkshire! I must thank our Captain, Jack for leading the team to victory in his final year in the boys. Also, Harry and Tom Kelly, again in their final year I thank you for your contribution and may I wish all three of you continued success in the future.
Many thanks must go to Cleveland Golf Club for hosting the event.
Finally, thanks to the Durham players for such a great match played in the true spirit of the game!
