Boys Beat Cheshire to take the Northern Counties League title
This, our fourth match against Cheshire was played at Wheatley GC on a warm, but slightly damp day for a change where the course was running fast and greens were good.
First out in the foursomes was Harry & Zac against Matty Griffiths & joe Dodd-Berry, a formidable pairing! The game was evenly balanced on the front nine with Harry & Zac edging into a 1Up lead at the turn where it remained until the fifteenth where a good birdie two took them 2Up and finally finishing on the last 2Up. In George & TJ’s game there was no more than 1Up in it and then at fifteen it was tied and a birdie from the Cheshire pairing securing a win for them. Archie & Ollie had a friendly start to theirs and with a birdie & a par on eight & nine they turned in 2Up where they then took control to win 4&3. George & Seth went 1Up on the first with a par and never looked back winning 2&1. Elliot & Albie didn’t get off to the best of starts and were 3Down after nine but pulled it back to level at fourteen with a good birdie. They went on to win seventeen and eighteen to win 2Up.
A great start to the morning foursomes with the scores at Yorkshire 4 – Cheshire 1.
In the afternoon singles Harry got off to a great start and was 3Up at the turn which continued to him winning 3&2. George was on fire and with seven birdies on the front nine was 4Up, a further birdie on ten took the game 6&5. Zac was suffering in the afternoon with an upset tummy and although played well considering he lost his game 6&4. Elliot played the front nine in terrific form going out 4Up which included 4 birdies and a bogey, to then finish his game off 5&4. Archie Played some good golf against his opponent who was on form and sadly lost 3&2. TJ went 1Up after the first and continued to increase his lead finishing 4&3. Ollie lost his game on the last to an eagle 1 Down. George was Up for most his game, but sadly with a three putt on seventeen he went down the last tied and that’s where it remained with both birdieing it. Albie went Up his game after four holes where he remained up and winning 2&1. In the final game Seth was Up from the first and that’s where he remained for the rest of the holes finishing on seventeen 2&1.
Final Score: Yorkshire 10.5 – Cheshire 4.5
A fantastic performance by our boys once again and with this win we are Northern County League Champions for the third-year running, and with one match, Cumbria still to play at the end of this month. A big thank you to the boys and especially our coach Craig Fricker.
My thanks also go to Aaron and staff at Wheatley Golf Club for looking after us on the day so well and it was great to see plenty of member spectators.
