9.5-8.5 Win for U16 Boys v Cheshire

We visited Malton & Norton GC for this annual match, which was in great condition, despite the lack of rain with the greens running true!

Our first foursomes’ game of Ollie and George got off to an indifferent start with both pairings going out in 40 with game tied. Cheshire pair of Ellis and Josh then took control to win 2&1. In our second game we had both our U16 Champion Charles and U14 Champion Albie who played par golf front nine to go out 2Down. They pulled it back to 1Down after 10, then were hit with a couple of birdies for the Cheshire pair to go 3Up where it remained for us to lose 3&2. The pairing of Joe and Seth were on form taking control after a bit of a dodgy first hole to be out in 3Up and it continued into the back nine where they closed the game our 5&4. Isaac and Cian were in control from the first hole taking the game to 3Up at twelve, but with three bogeys in the last four holes they tied the game. James and Sam. Playing for the first time took control of their game and were Up all the way winning 3&2. Jack and Lucas in our final game had mixed fortunes, being Up for most of the front nine, but again with four bogeys in the back nine they lost 3&1.

Ollie led the way in the afternoon against one of their top players, Ellis, however it was not the most sparkling of golf and Ollie was unable to tie the game on the last losing 1Down. George just couldn’t get going on the front nine and was 4Down after 10 holes. He played better back nine and with errors from his opponent, Josh he turned the game round to be tied after fourteen, where it remained until the final hole and with a missed four-foot putt from Josh, George won 1Up, a terrific win! Charles was in control of his game from the seventh hole winning 4&3. Another player Albie took control of his game early doors to win 3&2. Joe had a battle in his, with the score being no more than one in it for either player until the thirteenth where his opponent tied the game and it remained until the very last hole where Joe’s birdie from a wonderful wedge shot to the pin won the game 1Up. Seth was in control for most of the round, although it was tied again going down the last and with another birdie to his opponents’ par, he won 1Up. Isaac took a firm lead on the back nine to win 2&1. Cian sadly was not on his A game and lost 3&2. James, steady Eddie! controlled his game from the start and won 1Up. Sam had a close game with again no more than one in it and was tied going down eighteen to sadly lose 1Down to a par. Lucas struggled in his game and lost 4&3. Our final man, jack had a cracking game, but with three bogeys in the last in the last holes of his play he lost 2&1.

Final Score: Yorkshire 9.5 – Cheshire 8.5

Once again, we have seen a fantastic performance of golf from these young players of both sides played in the true spirit of the game as to be expected on a delightful course which both sides enjoyed. It was a very close match as always with 6 games going to the eighteenth hole! I am very pleased with the boys performance in this the U16’s final match of the season and all looks good for Team Yorkshire moving into 2026!
