2025 Boys Amateur Championship
The 2025 Yorkshire Boys Amateur Championship was held at Sandburn Hall golf Club with once again a full entry of 72 players of differing ages ranging from 12 to 18. The day started in very wet conditions until around 10.00am when the low handicap players were about to set off.
The early starters got off to playing some fine golf with young Albie Walker from Abbeydale recording a 71, clubhouse leader until Will Bracha (Sitwell Park) came in around 1.30pm with a fine 70. Scoring was extremely good in the morning despite the increased wind speed by lunch time and it was great to see the young ones managing the conditions well. Over half the players recorded scores below 70 in the morning and the leaders were tightly bunched with 21 players no worse than 2 over par. Our leader at lunch was Theo McCormick (Moortown) with a tremendous score of 4 under par 68 followed closely by Will Bracha, Harry Phillips, Alex Boyes and Albie Walker. It was to play for in the afternoon!
Albie Walker sadly fell away but still turned in a fine 78 to finish on 148.Scoring overall was tougher in the afternoon, possibly due to the greens drying out with the sun appearing and air becoming warmer as the day progressed. Theo took control of his lead and at one stage was 4 shots in front with his nearest rivals unable to catch him. Another young player in Ollie Scott kept his nerve in the afternoon after his splendid 72 (Par) round of the morning to finish with an equalling par round to finish in third place. Alex Boyes couldn’t get it going in the afternoon after his spectacular 1 under morning round and finished with a par round to take second place. Fourth and fifth were taken by Kye Boutell (Middlesbrough) and Seth Topham (Hornsea) with scores of 1 over and 3 over.
Theo played some great golf and managed to get it round in level par to take the title by a good 3 shots. This was his first attempt, and he now goes to Woodall Spa, home of England Golf in September to represent Yorkshire at the Boys Champion of Champions. He is certainly a good player, and I am sure we will be hearing more from him in the future.
As always, each year we participate in The Telegraph Justin Rose Junior Golf Championship, where Yorkshire have been successful at the finals with winners of Matt Fitzpatric 2012, Barclay Brown 2018, Ben Schmidt 2019 and Dylan Shaw-Radford 2022. Theo with the Best Gross of 68 against a course rating of 72.7 will advance on to the national gross leaderboard along with Albie Walker with the best net of 65 to the net leaderboard.
An enjoyable day was had by all, players, parents and officials on a very well-presented course of Sandburn Hall GC, a big thank you to them and the staff for looking after our needs on the day.
