“Walking in the footsteps of Harry Vardon”
Harry Vardon won six Open Championships and one US Open Championship, and was the most famous golfer of his day. He is associated with Harrogate Golf Club because, when the club celebrated the opening of their new clubhouse extension in 1908, they arranged an Exhibition Match consisting of Harry Vardon, Arnaud Massey, Ted Ray and J.H. Taylor, all famous golfers in their own right.
During the event, Harry Vardon allowed the club to make a bust of his, just as famous, “Vardon Grip”. The bust has been displayed in the clubhouse for many years, and many visitors make a bee-line to look at it.
More recently, the club commissioned a sculpture of the Vardon Grip, which can be seen outside the clubhouse.
It was at the Harrogate Golf Club that the second County Members’ Meeting of 2016 took place, the Spring Meeting No.2, and it attracted a large entry of 184 County members.
The weather stayed kind for most of the day, but the late starters had to endure some nasty rain that started at about 4pm.
Nevertheless the scores were good and only the odd point separated the top five places. 42 points was the winning mark, with 40 points required to make it onto the prize winners “podium”.

“My thanks to the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs and all her representatives for the lovely whisky tumblers and the voucher for yesterday’s win with Martin. A superb day on a wonderful golf course which I had never played before, organisation without fault as usual…these really are great social and golfing events and I hope I am able to play in them for many years to come”.
