“A Full Field of County Members at Fulford . . . .”
The day started wet for the early starters, but soon developed into an extremely beautiful late summer’s day.
It was a full field, with one hundred pairs playing. However, such was the demand to play, it was necessary to ballot out another 33 pairs. This was despite starting at 7.30am in order to maximise the available daylight hours.
The warm weather and excellent Fulford course seemed to bring out the best in the players with 46 pairs acheiving a score of 40 points or better.
Scores of 43 or 44 points did not stand a chance, as 45 points was needed to make it on to the leader board.
S. Smith, of Sandburn Hall, and his guest, M. Williams, from Consett set an early pace with 47 points, and had an anxious wait to see if anyone would overtake them. It was Messrs Procter and Smith from Shipley who matched their score later in the day, but Messr Smith and Williams prevailed with a better back 9 of 25 points
