15-3 win for U16 Boys v N Federation

Win for U16 Boys First Match

Our first match of the 2022 season was against the Northern Federation U16 Boys made up of four boys from each of Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland held at the Knaresborough Golf Club and guess what we had sunshine! Although it was a little chilly at times with that nasty north easterly!

We had some new faces in the team, Cooper Beck (Cottingham Parks), Alfie Baldwin (Wilton), Will Hixon (Ripon City) and Adam Watkin (Thirsk & Northallerton).

The boys got off to a flyer in the morning foursomes with five wins from six. The newcomers performed well with wins for all. Josh Stephens & Luke Thornton halved their match having a battle against two boys from the Northumberland Union.

The afternoon singles got off to a good start with Benjy Saia playing extremely well and managed to have his first “hole in one” on the 182 yard eleventh, giving him a convincing win of 7&6. Our other star player was Tom Hartshorne defeating his opponent 7&5, round in 2 under par! Huey Cunningham played well to win his game 4&3 along with Alfie Baldwin who appears to be currently on form, winning 1Up. Evan, Luke Thornton, Sam, Adam, Cooper all had good wins. Luke Schmidt managed to tie his game and alas Will Hixon who was under the weather recovering from flu lost on the last hole. Josh had a battle, once again up against Nairn, a formidable opponent having a battle to loose 3&1, but I’m sure they will meet again many a time in the future as they are both the same age!

A good victory 15 – 3 for our side played in the true spirit of the game with many new friends made between both sides. My thanks go to our Boys Captain Jake Wallis who came along for the day to support the boys. Thanks also go to Knaresborough Golf Club for providing an excellent course with good hospitality for the day.
