13-2 Win for Boys v Cumbria

Boys Win Against Cumbria

We arrived on the Friday for a practice round to be greeted with non-stop rain and wind!

So, we decided to walk the course in preparation for the match day only to find the weather worsened and Craig along with the boys were soaked when they arrived back (See Picture!)

The match day was slightly better in that it was cold moderate to strong wind with showers all day. Jonty (Boys Captain) led the way along with his partner George Cooper in the foursomes and managed to take control around halfway to win 4&3. Ewan and Max were 3Up with four to play and struggled in the strong wind to lose their game on the last 1 Down. Oscar and Josh were in total control of their game from the start and at one stage were 7Up but went on to win 6&4. Will and Archie played steady golf to win their game 2&1. Finally, George and Elliot controlled their game well to finish 4&3.

Lunch score 4 – 1 to Yorkshire

Jonty was first out against Bradley Qualye and immediately went 3Up after 5 holes and kept that lead to go on and win 4&2. George faced Gabriel Ridgeway in the second game and although level after 5 he went on to take a convincing win of 6&5. Ewan got off to a great start in his singles game going 3Up after four holes, however he lost a few holes in the middle and after 13 was 1 down, but he stuck at it and finally won 4&2, a good comeback! Max sadly was not having the best of days and lost his game 2&1.Oscar had a good battle against Theo Atkinson with him being 2Up after 4 holes, then level after 12 to go 1Down after 13, all square after 15 holes winning 17 and 18 to take the game 2Up.Josh Chi, Will Bracha and Archie Palmer all had comfortable wins in their games. George Walker was 3Up after 13 and his opponent, Alfie McDonough fought back to get the game back to being 1Down playing the last in which they both halved to give George the 1Up win. Our final man, Elliot Alcock had a tough game against Ben Stephenson where he was down all the way until 15 where his opponent lost his ball and Elliot levelled the game. Off to the 16th where they both halved the hole, but with a tremendous 3 on the 17th he went 1Up. So down the final hole with both teams spectating, Ben went over the green with his second and Elliot hit a super wedge hitting the flag and sadly not going in but finishing with 3 inches of the hole to take his game 2Up which was tremendous.

Final score Cumbria 2 Yorkshire 13.

I was very pleased with all our players and once again that Team Yorkshire spirit came to the fore especially in the tough conditions.

I must thank the Cumbria players for giving our boys a good match and despite the result they have a good team spirit and played the games with great sportsmanship which is always a delight to see.
