The Northern Counties Seniors League match between Yorkshire and Cumbria was held at Penrith Golf Club on Monday 24th June 2019
This was an eagerly awaited match following our Draw in the first match against Lancashire and knowing that as well as winning it was important to strive for a good winning margin as in the event of a tie on points at the end of the season the winning margins will decide the Champions.
With Jim Fairhurst dropping out through illness and Chris Ingham on holiday we had the opportunity to introduce Andy Woodhead (Scr) Hessle and Ian Backhouse (1) Knaresbrough after his excsellent performanc as runner up in the Senior Championship at Garforth.
Cumbria had introduced three new young players and had a great start winning the morning Greensomes 4-2. Johnny Lawrence and Richard Jones secured a half by winning both the 8th and 9th holes but Richard Norton and Alan Wright lost the 9th hole and their game. Both pairs were under par for the games.
Andy King and Mark Lawson produced sub par golf to win 4/3 then Gary Cuthbert and Steve Mason secured a half on the 9th and the match was tied at 2-2. Ian Clarke and Andy Whitworth struggled against the experienced Cumbria pair Andy Drabble and Martin Barrand to lose 3/2. Andy Woodhead and Ian Backhouse playing their first League match birdied the 8th to be 1 down but alas could only halve the 9th to lose 1 down.
As the sun started to shine so did our team with five wins from the six games played with three going to the last hole and only Ian Clarke and Andy Whitworth losing to a fine birdie from Adrian Drabble on the 18th winning the game. A final score 12-6 was a great result from a closely contested match.
