The season got off to a great start with a convincing win against Lincolnshire in our opening friendly match away at Elsham Golf Club. As this is one of the host clubs for the English Seniors Championships in June we had a strong team playing with six League team members turning out along with three new additions to the squad for the coming season – Alan Wright (Hessle), Andy Woodhead (Hessle)and Simon Betteridge Leeds).
The morning Greensomes produced excellent golf with Richard Norton and Alan Wright leading us off with a 3/2 win however Andy King and Andy Woodhead lost on the last hole to even the score. Andy Whitworth and Jim Fairhurst put us back on track with a 2/1 win with Craig Brown and Rod Shimwell followed by Charles Webb and Simon Betteridge securing fine halved game to lead 3-2. The final pair Marshal Newman and David Leaf lost the last game on the final hole for us to go in for lunch tied on 3 – 3.
In the afternoon Fourball games Norton and Wright were too strong for their opponents and won 5/3 but King and Woodhead lost 2/1 to keep the match halved after two games. Then the very reliable pair, Whitworth and Fairhurst, put us back in front with a 2/1 victory followed by wins for the remaining pairs Brown and O’Rourke 1hole, Newman and Leaf 4/3 with Webb and Betteridge securing a half on the last hole to win the match 12 – 6.
The competition for League team places will be strong this year with the new additions.
