Yorkshire Boys took on Lancashire Boys at Sandburn Hall Golf Club on 29th July 2019.
The day started off in drizzle at Sandburn Golf Club for our annual battle of the roses clash! However, as the morning foursomes progressed the rain dispersed with a breeze blowing and sunshine for the afternoon.
Our Boys Captain, Jack Maxey partnered recently crowned English Boys Champion, Ben Schmidt in the first game against Jamie Van Wyke & Jack Wallbank and took a commanding lead and were 5Up after seven holes finally winning 6&5. Josh Berry & Jack Ward had a tough game having been up early to been 2Down at 14, but with good wins on 15 & 16 got it back to all square where it finished on 18. The two Tom’s Pyman and Kelly struggled against their opponents to lose 3&2. The H&H Union pairing of Harry and Oliver also had a game on their hands again 2down at 14, managing to get a halve out of it. Our final two pairings of George Robson & Jack Wilson and Tom Duck & Matthew Holden played controlled golf to both win their games 3&2 and 6&4. A comfortable 4 – 2 lead at lunch.
Ben was first out in the afternoon singles against Jamie and what a game they had with birdies flying around by both players and in the end, Ben overcame Jamie 2&1. Captain Jack had a convincing win at 8&6. We then had a run of wins from Josh, Jack, Tom Pyman, Harry and Oliver, thus giving us the win over Lancashire. Our final games struggled with only Matthew Holden coming out with our final point to win the match 12 – 6 and retain the Jay Whittham Trophy for a second year.
A very convincing win for the boys and we move onto our next match in the Northern Counties League, Cheshire with a few of our players missing, including Ben who is travelling to the United States to compete in the US Amateur, where we wish him well.
