Yorkshire Boys win against Durham

Our final match of the season in the Northern Counties League was against Durham, played at Pontefract GC on a warm and humid day for a change and no rain!
Once again like the start of the year I decided to play some of our younger players, especially as we now lose many of our senior players having reached the age of moving up to Men’s golf.
They certainly didn’t disappoint! My regular duo of Josh and Tom took command of their game at the start being 2Up at the turn but lost ten and twelve to be all square and then with pars won 3&2. Luke and Alex were 2Up at the turn also and continued to be in command to win 3&2 also. Alfie and Benjy started well too to be 3Up at the turn winning easily 5&4. Jonty and Spencer’s game was close for most of the round but could not manage to regain control on the back nine until the final hole where they parred to win the hole and halve the game. Our final pairing of Harry and Ewan were 2Down at the turn, but after some good play on the back nine managed to take control at twelve to be 1Up where they remained for the win. Score at lunch 4.5 – 0.5
Josh Stephens went out at number one and had a tussle against Harry Cagill’s replacement James King who came in at the last minute as Harry was unwell. There was no more than 1Up in the game between them, however, took control on sixteen with a good birdie and finished with 2 pars to win 1Up. Tom was in control of his game after the fourth hole to hit the turn at 3Up and win 3&2. Alex was up in his game early and managed to be 3Up at fourteen, but then a couple of bogeys allowed his opponent to get the game back to 1Down, alas Alex won 1Up. Luke was in command of his game from the turn winning 4&3. Alfie and Jonty had a good battle with their opponents to tie their games. Benjy, Harry, and Ewan won their games easily 4&3. Spencer sadly was up against it with an eagle, birdie start early doors to put him 2Down from which he could not recover. Final score 12.5 – 2.5.
The boys played well both in the foursomes and the singles and I thought the team atmosphere was second to none. Both teams played the match in the true spirit of the game, and we look forward to visiting Durham next year.
I was really impressed with the team spirit of our players and Team Yorkshire is looking good!
