Yorkshire U16 Boys v Northern Federation & Scotland U16 Boys
Thursday 13th April 2017
Weather: Sunny morning, cloudy afternoon with a strong breeze all day.
The Northern Federation is made up of boys from Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham, together (usually) with Scotland boys, but on this occasion they were playing in the Scottish Boys Open Championship.
This was our first U16 (made up of 4xU16, 4XU15 & 4xU14 boys) match of the season and there were some new faces playing:
Jack Maxey 15 (Burstwick) H/C 3
Tom Kelly 15 (Fulford) 3
Jake Sowden 13 (Selby) 6
Nick Audsley 13 (Fulford) 10
Matthew Driscoll 13 (Bedale) 11
Luke Turner 13 (Hallowes) 14
In the morning foursomes, the team got off to great start and were up in 4 matches, down in 2 after 9. Our younger ones were playing well with Jake & Nick only 1 down and Matthew & Luke 4Up. Isaac & Jack had a commanding lead of dormie 3, but sadly only managed a half. The two Tom’s went to the last 1 up and managed to halve the hole to win. Ben Schmidt nearly holed in one on the 12th finishing 6 inches away, and they went on to win 3&1. Matthew & Luke continued to play well with extremely good foursomes scoring, winning 2&1.
Match score at lunch was 4.5 – 1.5
It had clouded over in the afternoon and got bitterly cold as the day wore on. Isaac led the way as Team Captain for the day playing some good golf to lead the team to the first win of the afternoon singles by 4&2. Jack took his match 1 up down the 18th again, but this time managed to halve the hole to win. Tom Kelly had a bad day on the greens which led to him losing. A tremendous effort by Oliver Abbott saw him winning his match 5&4. The younger boys struggled in the afternoon with only Matthew Driscoll coming back from being 3 down to win 2 up – 2 points claimed in his first outing, so well done to him. The final score was a Yorkshire win by 12.5 – 5.5.
Philip Woodcock, the Junior Chairman, was delighted with the team performance; all had played some exceptional golf, but ultimately playing as a team, all supporting each other and enjoying the day win or lose! He has some promising players coming through and Yorkshire continues to be in a good position and we look forward to our next match in the summer.
