Gloomy weather did not dampen the hopes of the Yorkshire supporters, as they gathered at the Lindrick Golf Club for the final match of the season, knowing that victory would bring the league title back to the County. Even though the side was strengthened by the availability of some of our England players, everyone knew that the task would not be an easy one.
The morning matches proved to be evenly balanced, and whilst good shots were to be seen, some strayed into the damp rough, and struggled to get back to the target. Lunchtime came with the match poised at 3-3.
A strong start was required in the afternoon, but despite an early lead, Jamie Bower lost the first match. However, Dan Brown, Ben Hutchinson, and Steve Robins all took early leads, which they never relinquished, each winning before the final hole. The middle order was more equally shared, with Alex Fitzpatrick and Will Whiteoak getting wins, and Kealan Lowe and James Cass losing, and the prospect of victory loomed. Another match won by Bailey Gill left the home side needing only a half from one of the remaining four matches, and when Ben Brewster won the 16th to go 2 up with 2 to play, the league title was assured. He went on to win his match, and with Jack Lampkin bringing home another win, and a half from David Hague, the afternoon finished with a score of 8½ – 3½, and a match total of 11½ – 6½.
