Rain stops play! It didn’t look good at the start of the Yorkshire Union 5th Division Team Championship at Wath on 17th May and the players were warned that we might not make it through the day. After more than 7 hours of play, several greens became too much for the squeegeeing officials to cope with, and facing the certainty of further rain, play was halted for the day, and a result declared for the first round. 68s from Sam Bairstow and Stefan Priest took Hallowes to the top of the leaderboard, thereby winning the John Keightley Trophy. But it was heartbreak for 4 of the promoted Clubs from the 6th Division, Bridlington, Ripon City, Low Laithes and Teesside who were within 2 shots of promotion this time, but were unable to show what they could do in round 2.
The course was in excellent condition and the Clubhouse staff sympathetically looked after the players, supporters and officials; the whole sodden lot of them.
