A lovely sunny day greeted the twelve teams from the previous week’s qualifier and the six from last year’s 6th Division, at Leeds Golf Club on Wednesday 19th April. A closely fought contest was likely as those who finished in the top six would play in the 6th Division at Halifax Bradley Hall on May 3rd, but those who didn’t would need to go through the whole qualifying system again next year.
The previous week’s winners, Doncaster Town Moor, showed that it was not just home advantage that got them through to this stage as they finished 4th. Qualifiers Horsforth finished third again, but it was another qualifying Club, Ripon City who raced to the top of the leaderboard on countback from Bridlington, and won the Roger Brook Quaich. All Ripon’s players improved on their first round scores but Aidan Carswell’s afternoon round of 67 was best of the day. Had he merely repeated his first round score, his team would have been resigned to qualifying again next year.
